Dog Trainer, Grisha Stewart, has a training centre in Seattle and has written a number of books on dog training and behaviour.
Grisha is a fan of counterconditioning and systematic desensitization, which can change a dog's opinion of things that trigger aggression or fear. It is much more kind and effective than forcing the dog to confront their fears or using corrections. When the standard version of classical counterconditioning wasn't enough to rehabilitate all of the barking issues with Grisha's own dog, Peanut, she devised a technique called Behaviour Adjustment Training ('BAT').
BAT helps dogs gain confidence and social skills using real-world consequences to reinforce relaxation and appropriate communication. Because behaviour is selected and reinforced as the dog is very gradually desensitized to potential triggers, BAT is considered to be an operant counterconditioning technique for systematic desensitization.
In this video, Grisha looks at the differences between BAT and the standard 'open bar / closed bar' technique commonly referred to by trainers as classical counterconditioning and systematic desensitization (or simply 'counterconditioning,' which is the term Grisha uses in the video). She considers the pros and cons of each technique and suggests which may be the better option for different situations.
