5 Creepy Ways Video Games Are Trying to Get You Addicted

Zitat
If you want to make him press the lever as fast as possible, how would you do it? Not by giving him a pellet with every press--he'll soon relax, knowing the pellets are there when he needs them. No, the best way is to set up the machine so that it drops the pellets at random intervals of lever pressing. He'll soon start pumping that thing as fast as he can. Experiments prove it.

They call these "Variable Ratio Rewards" in Skinner land and this is the reason many enemies "drop" valuable items totally at random in WoW. This is addictive in exactly the same way a slot machine is addictive. You can't quit now because the very next one could be a winner. Or the next. Or the next.

Can Aggression in Dogs Be Elicited Through the Use of Electronic Pet Containment Systems?
Richard Polsky, 2000
Link zur Studie: http://www.dogexpert.com/Bio/Electronic%20fences.pdf

Zitat
Polsky presented a set of five case reports based on data from legal documents relating to personal injury lawsuits involving severe attacks on humans by dogs who were being trained or maintained on an electronic pet containment system (using a shock collar). In every incident, the dog was within the "shock zone" and all fences were working; the dogs must then have received a shock. Four of the five dogs were not subject to threatening behavior by the victims prior to the attack. None of the dogs gave any kind of warning prior to biting, and all bit their victims repeatedly and seriously in the head, face, back and neck.
The analysis suggests that the dogs' aggression was caused by the shock. There are several unknown factors to the cases, including the training used to introduce the dog to the fence, the amount of time the dog spent outside unsupervised, and what level of shock intensity the dogs received. However, the reaction of the dogs, and especially the severity of the attacks, was inconsistent with their past behavior. Polsky concluded a "possible interpretation in terms of unconditioned aggression as a result of a dog having received electronic shock and avoidance-motivated aggression mediated through fear reduction toward human stimuli."

How to reduce herding behaviors in dogs

Zitat
The constellation of behaviors that enable herding dogs to assist humans with handling livestock can be annoying if the dog thinks of your children as sheep or cattle!  So, owners of herding dogs need to provide an outlet for the natural behaviors that these often brilliant and beautiful dogs come hard-wired with (weaving, gathering, nipping, barking, etc.), or they may come home to a bored Border Collie who has, in the absence of any sheep to herd, neatly penned the children in a corner of the back yard.  That may be a slight exaggeration, but it is often the interactions between herding dogs and children that cause herders to lose their homes and be unceremoniously dumped at a local shelter.  You can't take the herdiness out of these dogs, but you can redirect it in ways that will be rewarding to the dog and keep the humans in its life from becoming the object of some behaviors that can actually escalate into pushiness or aggression if left unaddressed.

Food rewards, as natural as eating

Zitat
There are people who say it is unnatural to reward a horse with food. Strangely enough, often those same people seem to think it is natural for a horse to be put in a round pen and be chased out of his wits. Personally I think when monitoring natural horses as well as the ones that live amongst humans, it seems a very natural thing to reward a horse with food.

Pressure or not?

Zitat
There are many ways of teaching a  behavior that isn't based on pressure/release. Some of these are : shaping, modeling, capturing, targeting, luring and mimicry. Once a behavior is learned, it's relatively easy to go back and add a cue that looks like a “Natural” pressure type cue….but it's NOT pressure related and that is a VERY big difference.

Do Animals Know Right from Wrong? New Clues Point to 'Yes'

Zitat
Animal morality is a tricky business, and more research is needed to discover when and in what forms it exists. That said, "The little we know now about the moral behavior of animals really leads us to conclude that it's much more developed than we previously gave them credit for. We are not the sole occupants of the moral arena – and it's unlikely that we would be, given what we know about evolution."

Are puppy parties making dogs dangerous?
Zitat
Socialise, socialise, socialise! Every book, every DVD, every TV show emphasises the importance of socialisation. The problem is none of them seem to tell you exactly how this is to be achieved. As a result, many owners know they should socialise their puppy, but have no idea how they're supposed to do it. They are told about the importance of socialising their dog with other dogs, with people, with traffic, and with a whole host of other stimuli. But I believe that without the owner being taught how to do this correctly and efficiently, the dog is much more likely to develop training and behavioural problems. And ironically, these problems may be directly attributable to the class they took the dog to, and to the trainer who with the best of intentions may have created exactly the problem for the dog and owner they were trying to prevent.

Please Don't Call Me a “Dog Whisperer”
Zitat

There is a cultural assumption that only trainers who use coercion can be successful in rehabilitating and modifying the behavior of dogs with extreme behavior problems – whether the dog has killed a number of small animals, has an established bite history with people or other dogs, or has torn the doors and windows out of the house as a result of separation anxiety. The second part of the myth is that trainers who eschew the use of coercion in favor of manipulating reinforcement opportunities only teach tricks to well-behaved dogs and allow dogs with behavior problems to die.

This is an myth. Most of the country's top behavior consultants, including actual behaviorists (who have advanced degrees in behavioral sciences), rehabilitate “red zone” dogs every day, working with real-life dog owners, a treat pouch, and dog- and people-friendly techniques grounded in modern science. To me and all behavior consultants who use positive reinforcement to rehabilitate dogs with behavior issues, please don't call us “Dog Whisperers” when you'd like to give a compliment.

"I had to..."

Zitat
There are a few phrases that really push my buttons. When talking to trainers, the one that will always get a reaction from me is this explanation for why the trainer used a specific technique or piece of equipment: "I had to."

When pushed to explain further why they "had to" it very often turns out there were other options available, but the choice was made to use that technique or equipment for reasons such as "Well, the class was nearly over" or "the client was frustrated" or "I had tried everything else" (really?), and so much more that has nothing to do with a careful analysis of the dog, the behavior, the situation or training methodology.  Worse still, the trainer often attempts to rationalize it as if the animal left the trainer no other options.

Dogs Walked by Men Are More Aggressive

Zitat
Dogs being walked by men are four times more likely to threaten and bite other dogs and dogs on a leash are more likely to act aggressively than dogs off the leash.

These are just a couple of revelations about dog walking behavior from an extensive new study that examined how a dog's age, S** and size, as well as the owner's S** and use of a leash, affect how canines act on their walks.

The study, accepted for publication in the journal Applied Animal Behavior Science, surprisingly found that the S** of the owner had the biggest effect on whether or not the dog would threaten or bite another dog.
