The use of positive reinforcement training to reduce stereotypic behavior in rhesus macaques

Zitat
Stereotypic behavior is a pervasive problem for captive monkeys and other animals. Once this behavior pattern has started, it can be difficult to alleviate. We tested whether or not using positive reinforcement training (PRT) can reduce this undesired behavior.

Roles of learning theory and ethology in equitation

Zitat
By definition, ethology is primarily the scientific study of animal behavior, especially as it occurs in a natural environment; applied ethology being the study of animal behavior in the human domain. The terms equine ethology and ethological training are becoming commonplace in the equestrian domain, yet they seem to be used with a conspicuous lack of clarity and with no mention of learning theory. Most of what we do to train horses runs counter to their innate preferences. This article summarizes the ethological challenges encountered by working horses and considers the merits and limitations of ethological solutions. It also questions the use of terms such as "alpha" and "leader" and examines aspects of learning theory, equine cognition, and ethology as applied to horse training and clinical behavior modification..

Trailer-loading of horses: Is there a difference between positive and negative reinforcement concerning effectiveness and stress-related signs?

A recent study showed that positive reinforcement training provides the fastest training solution and resulted in less stress response in horses and trailer-loading (Hendriksen, Elmgreen, Ladewig, 2011).

More interesting facts about the amygdala and our response to animals.

Captivated by Critters: Humans Are Wired to Respond to Animals

Zitat
Our study shows that neurons in the human amygdala respond preferentially to pictures of animals, meaning that we saw the most amount of activity in cells when the patients looked at cats or snakes versus buildings or people," says Florian Mormann, lead author on the paper and a former postdoctoral scholar in the Division of Biology at Caltech. "This preference extends to cute as well as ugly or dangerous animals and appears to be independent of the emotional contents of the pictures. Remarkably, we find this response behavior only in the right and not in the left amygdala."

Pavlovian Conditioning: "It's not what you think it is"

Zitat
Current thinking about Pavlovian conditioning differs substantially from that of 20 years ago. Yet the changes that have taken place remain poorly appreciated by psychologists generally. Traditional descriptions of conditioning as the acquired ability of one stimulus to evoke the original response of another because of their pairing are shown to be inadequate. They fail to characterize adequately the circumstances producing learning, the content of that learning, or the manner in which that learning influences performance. Instead, conditioning is now described as the learning of relations among events so as to allow the organism to represent its environment. Within this framework, the study of Pavlovian conditioning continues to be an intellectually active area, full of new discoveries and information relevant to other areas of psychology.

Neuronengeflüster im Endhirn
Zitat

Esther

Counter Classical or Counter Operant?

Zitat

Classical Conditioning has nothing to do with training a particular behavior. It is a way of linking and emotion with a stimulus (bell = feel good like you do when you smell food, or “Her getting her keys makes me happy cuz when she does I'll get LIVER!). Operant Conditioning is about reinforcing a behavior (“If I sit and stay I'll get LIVER!).
