Young Horses Behave Better Around Adults

Zitat
The age composition of a herd significantly influences how well young horses learn social skills. Observations of wild horses find that when greater numbers of adults are around, yearlings and two-year-olds act less aggressively. Notably, the relative proportions of young and adult horses in a herd figure heavily in how the youngsters behave.

Zitat
Your relationship with your horse is, in good part, determined by the balance of appetitives and aversives that you use with them on a daily basis. Like a set of scales, tip the balance too far one way, and the nature of the relationship can change from a happy one to an unhappy one. This is all because of classical conditioning.

Learning from other species.

Zitat
Switching over from feeling for a release to visually looking for small muscle movements that indicate effort is not easy for many people. We've trained ourselves to hang on until we “feel” the try and now we're being asked to stand there and watch for repeated motions for which we click. That's a shift for people AND horses.

The Jigsaw Puzzle

by Dorothy Heffernan

Zitat
Our brains have two important things to do: they need to remember all the information about the experience of trying to do the new thing that we gain during our practice session (and these include the times we almost managed, the times we were way off and the occasional times when, by accident, we did it exactly right). One part of our brain is expert at storing all these: it's like the cache on your computer, a temporary store for recent events that you might need to think about later. Each day, this gets all filled up with what you're doing. If you tried to permanently store all the information you take in each day, your brain's hard drive would end up full! The magic part is the second part of the brain… It's the part that has stored all your skills and memories of how to learn – but while useful stuff is stored there, it needs to be uploaded again to be used.
