Cagebreak! Rats Will Work To Free A Trapped Pal

Zitat
Calling someone a "rat" is no compliment, but a new study shows that rats actually are empathetic and will altruistically lend a helping paw to a cage mate who is stuck in a trap.

Not only will rats frantically work to free their trapped cage mate; they will do so even when there's a tempting little pile of chocolate chips nearby, the study reveals. Instead of leaving their pal in the trap and selfishly gobbling the candy all by themselves, rats will free their cage mate and share the chocolate.

"What Were Wars?" Don't Blame Other Animals For Human Violence

Zitat
Warlike animals are the rare exception, not the rule, and this must be factored into our own rationalizations and justifications for our seeming obsession with making war. War is a choice and non-human animals should not be blamed for our destructive inclinations.

Do Dolphins Speak Whale in Their Sleep?

Zitat
Sleep talking. Performing dolphins that hear humpback whale calls during the day might be repeating them later that night.

So why would dolphins want to mimic whales? It might be because the shows prime the animals to learn and remember information.  The shows are a really special time in the day, because the dolphins get rewards for performing well. During the rest of the day, the park is open and people can view the tank, chatter, and applaud.  There are lots of things they could mimic but don't. ... It's really remarkable the only mimicry  found was this one.   Dreams might help dolphins etch new information into their memories, just like in humans.

Crested macaque monkeys follow friends before family
Zitat
Friendship is important to cope with day to day life and survival. In some species, friends are probably as important as family and dominance status. In some contexts - like gaze following - friendship can even be more important than family ties.

In the Eyes of a Dog
Zitat
Sit a dog in front of a television screen, and it may not always look intently at what it sees. But show a person on that screen who looks directly at the dog and says "hello," and the canine will pay attention. In fact, a new study shows that a dog will go so far as to follow the gaze of the human on screen when he or she looks to one side or the other–something not even chimps can do.

Chimpanzees consider their audience when communicating
Zitat
Researchers found that wild chimps that spotted a poisonous snake were more likely to make their "alert call" in the presence of a chimp that had not seen the threat.

Drowning Rats and Human Depression: Positive Psychology for Whom?
Zitat
The 'learned helplessness test' tested how hard a rat would try to escape an unpleasant situation ... animals that model a depressed state have a high threshold to avoid unpleasant stimuli, which means they lack the motivation to seek a better environment. The researchers measured the neural activity in the rats with a method called whole-cell patch clamp recording, a process where the brain is removed from the rats, and then cut into thin slices. The brain cells can be maintained alive for about eight hours once removed from the body.

Ravens Use 'Hand' Gestures to Communicate
Zitat
Ravens use their beaks and wings much like humans rely on our hands to make gestures, such as for pointing to an object, scientists now find.

NO MOM, NO PEACE FOR RHESUS MONKEYS
Zitat
Stress at an early age can have important consequences on the behaviour and brain development of an animal.
The results from this study are unique in that they show that the effects of stress at an early life stage cannot fully be reversed by subsequent exposure to a normal ‘unstressful' life and that early adversity can have long-lasting consequences on the physiology and behaviour of an animal. The good news is, the better we understand how psychiatric problems develop, the better equipped we will be to deal with them.

When You Need New Glasses…
Zitat
There is no doubt that seeing things clearly is of great value in our equestrian lives, and that looking at our experience through the correct lens will help us greatly in our quest to accomplish our riding goals.  It is equally important to remember that no amount of focus or clarity will serve to help us overcome the challenges in our equestrian journey, if we are seeing things clearly through an unhelpful frame.
